Will Your Moving Company Move Your Guns And Ammo?

Different moving companies have different policies pertaining to the transportation of firearms and ammunition. Some may refuse to transport weaponry as a matter of policy, which is determined by the company itself. Ammunition is another matter and must be addressed separately. So what happens if you're moving house and need to have your guns and ammo moved along with the rest of your possessions?

Ask Your Moving Company

It's a question to ask when choosing a moving company for your relocation—will they move your guns for you? Some may outright refuse, and others may be willing to do so under certain safety conditions. Naturally, all weapons to be transported must be unloaded. All bullets must be removed and packed separately

Transportation of Ammunition

While a moving company can transport guns, they won't be willing to transport bullets. The casing of bullets contains a small explosive charge, meaning bullets are classified as hazardous materials. This puts them into the same broad category as other explosives (such as fireworks and marine flares), as well as other prohibited items, such as corrosive chemicals and solvents. Some items are deemed too dangerous for a residential moving company to handle, and may actually void their insurance. You'll have to transport ammunition yourself, and it's important to do so safely.

Safely Moving Ammunition

Ammunition can be placed in your vehicle in a locked case. Although sunlight won't cause a bullet to go off or detonate or anything similar, concentrated heat can reduce the performance of the bullet. Place it inside a locked case, and store it away from direct sunlight for the duration of its transportation. Your guns themselves can be moved by your moving company along with the rest of your household contents.

Safety Measures and Gun Safes

It's important to double-check all policies that the moving company has applied to the relocation of firearms. They may insist upon various safety measures, such as trigger locks. Guns may also need to be removed from a gun safe if you have one. It's crucial to tell your moving company when a safe has to be moved, as this requires specialist equipment, and it may be impossible for it to be moved by hand. Moving a gun safe isn't complicated, but requires advance warning to your moving company.

Once they have been made safe to the company's specifications, there's no reason why firearms can't be securely packed away and moved with the rest of your possessions.
